Navratri Day 1 – Shailputri Maha Puja

The first form of Ma durga among the nine incarnations is Shailputri. She is known by this name, because she was incarnated from Himalayas, known as the Emperor of mountains. Shailputri in her previous birth was born as a daughter of Daksha Prajapati. Her name was ‘Sati’ and in her next birth she born as a daughter to Himalaya and was named Parvati.

According to the Hindu legend Shiv Mahapuran, Devi Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha was married to Lord Shiva or Mahadeva. However, King Daksha was not in the favour of this marriage. He organized Maha Yagya one day and invited all the Gods and deities in the yagya. But, Lord Shiva and Sati were not invited.

Hearing about this, Sati was deeply hurt and realized that her father did this to insult her husband Lord Shiva. She went to the yagya and scarified her body to the fire of the Yagna. This sight was too painful for Lord Shiva and he performed ‘Tandav Nritya’. He made himself isolated from everyone and went for penance for long eras. Without him the whole universe was in disorder. After several years, with the re-birth of Sati by the name Parvati at the home of King Himalaya, ray of hope was nurtured. Although, it was very difficult from Parvati to get Lord Shiva attention, as Mahadev lost himself in the densest of Sadhna.
