Saraswati Puja 2016: Worshipping Goddess Saraswati

Maa Saraswati is regarded as the Goddess of knowledge, education and arts. Basant Panchami being the birthday of Goddess Saraswati, people worship her on this particular day. It is believed that if you worship Goddess Saraswati on this particular day, she will bestow on you lot of knowledge. The day of Basant Panchami is also known as Abujh Muhurat. Goddess Saraswati is worshiped in all the schools, temples and other educational institutions during this muhurat. All the children and students keep books and stationery at the feet of Goddess Saraswati and worship her in the same way to get blessings from her. Goddess Saraswati is also considered to be the Goddess of art and music. Goddess Saraswati is worshipped before the beginning of any sort of cultural music or activity.


The Goddess Of Knowledge: Maa Saraswati

As per Indian mythology, Maa Saraswati wears white colored saree, which is a symbol of purity. She is portrayed with four hands. She holds her Veena with her two hands, a white lotus in the other hand and carries the scriptures in the fourth hand. Goddess Saraswati is also called the mother of Sanskrit. The scriptures in her hand symbolises immense learning, education and knowledge. According to the belief, if a person worships Goddess Saraswati, then that person becomes the owner of great knowledge and wisdom.


The Legend of Saraswati Puja

Lord Brahma created the earth and human beings, according to Hindu mythology. But he got very disappointed when he saw that all around there is only silence. At that time, he created Goddess Saraswati by sprinkling some water in the air. Goddess Saraswati is also called as water deity as she came from water. Goddess Saraswati was born with Veena in her hand. Maa Saraswati filled the world with soothing music and blessed the world with beautiful voice.

There is also another legend that is associated with Saraswati Puja. According to the legend, once ‘Kalidasa’, the famous poet went to commit suicide in the river Saraswati, as because he was called foolish by his wife. As he was going to jump in the river, at that time Goddess Saraswati emerged from water. She told him to take a dip in the water. Kalidasa did accordingly and after that very moment he became learned and intelligent. Then he became a famous poet. For this reason, Goddess Saraswati is worshiped for blessing us with knowledge and learning.

Significance of Yellow Color On Vasant Panchami

Yellow symbolizes spring season. So people wear yellow clothes and eat yellow colored sweets on the day of Basant Panchami. Yellow is the color of Sun that provides energy and yellow flowers bloom in mustard fields.


Celebration of Vasant Panchami 2016

The festival of Basant Panchami carries social, religious, and seasonal significance. People celebrate this festival with great joy and enthusiasm. In the morning, after worship of Goddess Saraswati, children fly kites. Some people feed Brahmans to satisfy their ancestors. As per Hindu mythology, if you feed a Brahman on Basant Panchami, your ancestors directly accept the food. Some people also worship Kamadeva (God of Love) on this day.
